Hi Phillipa,
40 is when my really first major depression hit. Unfortunately, I had dysthymia and social anxiety untreated from my teenage years on. I think the big thing was the untreated social anxiety. People just don't realize how life changing this affliction can be. It changes your relationships, your love life, your work life, just about everything that makes up your personality. Another thing is the substance abuse that goes along with it. Self medication for social anxiety is, I'm sure, quite common. Probably causes a great amount of the binge drinking and drug abuse in our young people. I was never an alcoholic, put you would definitely of called me a problem drinker from 18 to 25 years of age. Lucky, I survived those years.
