I've been on Nardil for over a decade and I do eat some of the contraindicated foods. In my experience with Parnate, it seems to be a lot easier to have a hypertensive episode than with Nardil. I even had a rare auto-hypertensive episode with Parnate; that ended my last trial with the medication.With Nardil, I drink coffee, eat pizza with mozzarella, all kinds of yogurt, most alcohol-except tap beer & red wine, Monterey Jack cheese, Parmesan cheese, sour cream, snow peas and lots of other stuff. While on Parnate, I was a lot more careful. I would drink small amounts of coffee, but it wired me out so bad, that I gave it up.
Almost all over the counter cold medicines are no go. I do use diphenhydramine (Benadryl) with Nardil and have never had a problem. Guaiphenesin(Robitussin) is an expectorant and is OK as long as nothing is added to it like a cough suppressant. Most narcotic pain relievers are OK unless they affect serotonin like meperidine and tramadol. Straight codeine is fine as a cough suppressant, but again, nothing added to it.
