Hi, I went to school for math and had the same problem. For me it was a little worse though, I would consistently get 0 hours the night before an exam.
I would always be under the impression that I could sleep, so I'd never take anything till the last minute.
I was also highly paranoid about any drug effects, so for a while I would refuse to take drugs.
Eventually I started to use a variety of meds to get some sleep. Trazodone, remeron, amitriptyline etc, proved almost useless for this kind of insomnia. Not to mention they had hangover effects.
I settled on zopiclone. If I took 3.75mg early enough (say 8:00pm), It'd usually be enough to sleep 8-9 hours. Sometimes I would mix this with 2-5g of creatine.
The creatine helped my anxiety (has an antiglutamatergic effect), and has a positive (short term) effect on boosting brain power.
In most cases, I noticed vastly improved performance with those two alone.
