It is possible that you are experiencing some behavioral disinhibition with both Xanax and alcohol, the consequences of which would make you feel more social and talkative with a reduction in fears and anxiety. In addition, Xanax is the BZD that produces the most robust antidepressant effect.
As you have already indicated, you may have comorbid depression (major depressive disorder or dysthymia) along with social anxiety that would be responsive to an antidepressant with or without gabapentin. If you are ready to take a MAOI, I would recommend trying Nardil before trying Parnate. There is more convincing data for the efficacy of Nardil for social anxiety and social phobia. If you should develop intolerable side effects, you might then go back and try Parnate. It seems that anhedonia comprises a large counterpart of your illnesses. Either MAOI is capable of addressing this.
