As I have written before, I have been stable on parnate for over a year. I also take perphenazine (low dose, only 12mg) for lingering SI and that seems to work well. The only side effect I have is insomnia and my p-doc prescribed trazadone (which is contra-indicated with MAOIs, but hasn't caused me any problems) and ativan. The ativan puts me to sleep and the trazadone keeps me there for 7-8 hours.
I empathize with people on this site who can't find meds to help. I was battered around for two years of severe depression and SI. MAOIs are best for people with atypical depression (sleeping all the time, severe SI, mood reactivity) which I had. I find that many people on this site are scared by MAOIs and all the food restrictions. But the restrictions are actually pretty minimal. Cheese, salami, pepperoni, red wine -- not exactly staples in the American diet. And not very healthy anyway, full of cholesterol. Besides, I have found that I can eat small amounts of parmesan and feta and even blue cheese on salads and pasta. I just have to keep the amount low and be careful.
So that's how I'm doing.
