I have a minor in statistics, so I think I understand what the problem with the meters is. I think the issue is that the margin of error on the meter is the same across its whole range of values. Say that it gives you a value of X +/- 20. This is not much an issue if the value is on the high end of the range, but that error (20) is a much larger percentage of a low value than it is of a high value. I don't know if I'm explaining this too well...
