Some people need to withdraw from it simply because they no longer need it and therefore get overdosed effects such as falling over, sleeping excessively, and essentially becoming non-functional (like this http://itsnotmental.blogspot.com/2010/02/bipolar-and-off-her-meds.html)

Other people have to come off it due to a rash or other side-effects.

We have a family member that had to taper off Lamictal, with the help of the psychiatrist who had the family member taper off very slowly, decreasing in small amounts. The family member still suffered withdrawal effects even tapering off it slowly. At first, the person was confused by the withdrawal and thought the effects meant it should not be lowered because she had mood instability as a withdrawal effect, but the withdrawal effects subsided after a couple days. Unfortuantely the family member had to go throwugh the withdrawal symptoms repeatedly with each lowering of the dose.

I am trying to remember what was used to ease the withdrawal symptoms. Perhaps it was a small amount of a benzodiazapine.
