prefrontal dopamine not the magic cognition booste

Posted by linkadge on January 23, 2011, at 18:01:11

I was just listening to a radio broadcast on how the prefrontal cortex modulates cognition.

Boosting metabolism in the prefrontal cortex only enhances cognition for certain tasks (executive function: ordering, calculating etc) however activity in the prefrontal cortex can lower activity in the parietal lobes: i.e. insight.

An attempt to "boost dopamine in the prefrontal cortex to improve cognition" might only work to a certain extent in people with abnormally low level in this region. Boosting it above that level will probably make you obsessive and less able to solve problems in insightful creative ways.
