I think that the TCAs as a class are less likely than the SSRIs to induce refractoriness to that drug upon repeated drug exposures. In other words, I think there is a tendency for an SSRI to self-induce a refractoriness against subsequent treatment attempts. Nortriptyline seems more likely to allow one to "recapture" the initial antidepressant response, even after a period of abstinence.
