Parnate is cosiderably more powerful, probably the most powerful AD in psychiatry. Effexor is practically only an SSRI until you get to very high doses, and then is only a slight NRI. Parnate increases serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine in the brain. Parnate is not associated with significant weight gain or sexual side-effects. Do not let the "old wives' tails" scare you, a trial of Parnate would be perfectly safe, as long as you stop any contraindicated meds and heed the food restrictions. I take Parnate and it's not hard at all. And remember, if you take meds that are not compatible with MAOI's, you must wait two weeks (five weeks for Prozac) after you discontinue the drug before you may begin the MAOI.
