In reply to Manic neighbors story now off all but ad and benzo, posted by Phillipa on June 7, 2011, at 11:44:47
I've heard of people getting incorrect diagnoses b/c of the meds they were on. I was diagnosed with a personality disorder (narcissism) b/c I was surly and grandiose on adderall. I went off all meds, had problems, ended up in a hospital, and when I was on the "right" medication I was told it was "really" bipolar all along.
Other times I think even if the diagnosis is reasonably accurate, med combos can make someone crazy. A lot of psychiatric drugs have (not surprisingly) psychiatric side effects (drug induced mania, drug induced depression, cognitive dulling, etc.), so it makes sense that some people (maybe a lot of people?) present with problems that are largely drug-induced and are diagnosed as if the problems were somehow caused by a "mental illness" (or "personality disorder," as in my case).
I'm happy for your neighbor.
