My experience is that ERs will immediately put you on observation and under security and section you if you say you are suicidal. If you are just really bummed out and have no suicidal plans, they'll keep you hanging around for a few hours to see a psych resident then send you home.
I can't beleive your p-doc just leaving you high and dry like that. Mine would never do that. Go to your insurance company's website and start making calls. Make at least three appointments so you can get some choice. That's how I found my (wonderful) p=doc. He was one of three appointments I made cold-calling from the insurance company's list. I knew as soon as I saw him that he would help me. The next week, I called him and asked if he would do therapy with me and he said yes. I was esctatic.
