Rozerem is a melatonin agonist--its mechanism of action, hitting Melatonin 1 and 2 receptors, but not MT3 receptors (if I remember correctly), supposedly allows it to induce sleep without causing depression. However, I can tell you from personal experience that this is not always true: it definitely increased my depression, as did its cousin agomelatine. So be aware of that possibility, if you're depressive or bipolar. It may not be very likely, as I don't think it showed up in trials (melatonin itself is known to cause depression on occasion).
Anyway, rozerem was mildly effective for sleep, for me, but no more than that, and definitely not worth the lowering of mood and near-suicidality it inflicted on me. Any hangover you might get with it, though, will likely be much less severe than with a benzo or Lunesta. It's just a less powerful, more subtle drug, that way.
And, yes, it's sonata that you can take in the middle of the night (because the half-life is so short).
