well......what a great question. Short answer: yes, I think it's prudent, although a case could be made I am overreacting as statistically I think the incidence is awfully low....first 6000 who took it in trials = 0 incidents....the one or two who did have serious liver problems later recovered without a transplant upon discontinuation....if my memory is any good. I *think* it recommends checking in the pt. insert but not how often, of course.
So.....when I started the med and I was still on active duty and/or getting care from a USAF clinic once I retired (10/2004), they gladly checked them every six months. I think military docs tended to be over cautious and also the fact insurance is not involved but instead taxpayer $$ may have been a factor. We always got outstanding care - period. Also, the med was brand new and they knew none of us *really* knew much about it except what Eli Lily shared, I suppose. This would have been 2004 - 2006 or so....then I transitioned to a civilian provider since as a retiree I really couldn't get an appt. without waiting for --- ever, which is understandable with limited resources which must go to the AD folks. My first doc (PCP) would have checked every six months if I'd insisted but she thought it likely wasn't necessary after reading the literature. So we went to once a year and that's what it's been ever since, through 4 different docs. In fact, I'm about to have yearly labs next week.
