Your depiction of phenol is flawed. The phenol molecule might be toxic (which is actually a good thing, as phenol is used as an antiseptic), but many of the compounds phenol is incorporated into are not.
For instance, did you know that phenol is a critical ingredient in the body's manufacturing of monoamine neurotransmitters? These include serotonin / dopamine / adrenaline / noradrenaline.
It is the pure phenol molecule that was used as a lethal injection, not phenolic compounds.
Phenol is our friend, not our enemy.
