In reply to is the FDA truly a watchdog for the people, posted by poser938 on February 16, 2012, at 21:29:40
Did you know that zoloft did not really do well in clinical studies but because of knowing the right people the FDA decided to go ahead and give it a shot anyway. Turned out to be a decent med, but still, the point is it was passed subjectively not objectively.
One could write an entire book on all the crooked or nonsensical stuff involved with the FDA. I think they should change their purpose....simply identify potential dangers of various meds, let the real world decide if the meds actually work or not.
Amisulpride is probably one of the best meds, and yet USA will never see it due to the way the FDA is set up. Other lesser meds are praised instead. No matter amisulpride has decades of successful safe usage around the rest of the world and is approved in many countries. Just one of many examples. On and on.
How about the Lyme vaccine that ended up getting people sick with Lyme symptoms even though they weren't infected with anything. It took hundreds of screaming complaining people to get the FDA to listen, and in the end the vaccine was pulled...but to save face they declared it was pulled because "it wasn't profitable". Nothing to do with the fact it was an experiment gone horribly wrong.
The problem with government agencies like that is they have no accountability. You or me screw up at our job or do something perceived as corrupt, guess what, we're fired. Employees of WalMart are required to have far higher standards than FDA.
Maybe the "intention" of the FDA is to be a watchdog, but I think most of those types of government people are self serving elitists who have some genetic disposition to crave control of other people's lives. Hey just my opinion not intended to offend anyone who might disagree.
Intentions don't count....results do. The problem is government is not judged on results, just supposed good intentions.
