i never knew president lincoln was a depressive until i got depression and started researching...
look at honest abe's face on our $5 bills; he's only in his early 50's in that pic. i'm sure the stress of the civil war contributed (and his wife!), but still, that is a very tired and worry lined face.
i think i remember reading that US presidents 'age' twice as fast while in office due to stress. that may be part of it. though i believe the pic of lincoln may be from his first term.
as a young man he was put on 'suicide watch' at least twice and was known for his very melancholy (depressive to us) bouts. i recommend the book; 'lincoln's melancholy' if anyone is interested in learning more about his battle with depression.
i've also hear that if you look in the mirror and smile, even if it's fake, it helps with depression. never seen citation of this though.
