Yeah, I think it's a really interesting phenomenon... as far as I know, no one's sure why it works but limiting REM cycles seems to be the main theory. I believe it works for unipolar depression and can possibly swing those with bipolar into a manic state (did you mean hypermania btw?). I remember being so excited when I found out sleep deprivation can help depression. The only problem is that it generally only lasts a few days at most and then tends to make depression worse so it's not a sustainable solution, but if it helps you "reset" then go for it!
