I wonder if your problem might be in how you expect your medications to make you feel. I used to take provigil which is almost the same as nuvigil. I never felt very much when taking it but at the end of the day I'd notice that I'd done more than I would have on days I didn't take it. However on a day when I didn't need to do anything I wouldn't feel like I'd taken anything.
Something similar happens when I take antidepressants. I've never woken up happy. What has happened is after a period of weeks I suddenly realize that I haven't felt suicidal in days. Or something silly that would have made me very angry before doesn't anymore. But I don't feel different from minute to minute. I feel like I've always been that way unless I find specific things to measure - like how often I got angry. Or how many days I couldn't go to work.
This is a very different feeling from anything I've felt using recreational drugs where all of a sudden I would feel mellow or think that I was brilliant. Until the drugs wore off.
Perhaps when you are prescribed a new drug you can ask your doctor what you should expect to feel when it's working and how soon you should feel it.
Good luck.
