...except in those cases where Zyprexa or Seroquel works but risperidone does not. Risk vs benefit. For some, there is no benefit in taking risperidone. It just doesn't do the job. Each of the APs have their disadvantages. Risperidone can cause an accumulation of abdomninal fat, hyperprolactinemia, and an increased rate of breast cancer. Risperidone is also capable of precipitating diabetes, although not at as high a rate as Zyprexa. The risk of diabetes seems to be dose-dependent. Of the atypical neuroleptic antipsychotics, I believe risperidone has a greatest risk of producing tardive dyskinesia. However, this, too, is dose-dependent.
