Barbiturates fell from use in the 60's and 70's because the benzodiazepine hypnotics (nitrazepam and flurazepam) were shown in controlled studies to be just as effective, but to be virtualy non toxic in overdose (30 Amytal or Nembutal or Seconal or Tuinal will easily kill you)
They also discovered that benzo hypnotics retain their efficiacy much longer than barbiturates 9totorance to barbiturates is almost complete after 4 weeks, where as nitrazepam still showed significant improvement in sleep peramaters afetr 6 months of daily use)
Barbiturate hypnotics produced a much more severe morning hangover.
Noone is going to prescribe you a barbiturate in this day and age rj - forget it.
