The IV procedure has compelling documentation to show that it is robustly effective. I don't know about the IM procedure. From what I understand, it is important to hit a "zone" of partial unconsciousness in order for ketamine to work. Too much or too little fails to produce a therapeutic effect. I don't know if IM administration can be controlled well enough to bring one sufficiently into the zone for long enough so as to produce the results seen with the IV protocol.
