I fall into the camp of those who believe AAPs are prescribed far too often and that they are potentially dangerous drugs. I have read that they are not truly that much safer than typical APs, the drug cos just spin them that way. I believe for the most part they should be rxd for what they were made for: psychosis, and that the drug companies are making lots of bucks b/c they are used for depression, insomnia, etc. But EPS is no joke, many patients get akathisia and think it is just anxiety from hell, they think their condition is worsening, and some of these patients commit suicide because of this. And then there are the negative metabolic effects such as weight gain and glucose intolerance.
I know some people who are not psychotic say they are helped by these drugs, and if so the drugs worth the risk, but I personally think they are kinda scary.
