Xanax prn - dependence

Hi all,
I've been using Xanax for maybe 8 months, on an 'as needed' basis. Usually twice a week.
Taking account of its short half life, should I be ok with regard to addiction? I've had a period of two weeks where I didn't take any and was fine for example, no withdrawals.
Is this a safe regimen to avoid dependency?
