Deep TMS, or the H-Coil, is going to be presented at the annual San Francisco psychiatric meeting. It already has FDA approval, but has yet to be manufactured or marketed in the US. The company is planning to manufacture and sell 100 units in the US within the next year, so the treatment should begin to be available in 2014..
The H-Coil can seSnd electro-magnetic pulses 8 cm. ( 5 inches) into the brain without anesthesia or excessive pain. A particularly exciting feature is that it will more directly stimulate the centers where motivation and reward are located in the limbic system. This is so encouraging because present treatments often treat the worst symptoms of depression, but do little to combat anhedonia and losses in motivation.
I hope this will be a great treatment. As a present rTMS responder, I would be very interested in switching to this newer technology when it becomes available. I think there are lots of other people here who might also be interested.
