I have heard of the movie Awakenings with Robert DeNiro I believe. I saw it quite a long time ago, but the clinical observations shown in the movie have indeed reminded me of some of the effects I've experienced with my mental illness and the treatments I've tried. I imagine many people struggling with these issues have had the same type of thoughts as you and I have.
