Yes, it probably would be best to start metformin straight away given your previous experience. If you are over 65 (approx), your doctor should take a blood test for kidney function before you start. Other routine bloods can be done at the same time. If you are young with no medical problems the blood test may not be necessary.

I took minocycline many years ago for acne. Took it for over a year. I didn't notice any changes in my mental health though.
