Stopping Then Restaring A Medication Can Cause

Hello,
Can stopping then restarting a medication yield different results/side effects/symptoms? Or not even work the next time around?
I fear this may be the case with me.
I believe it can happen in Some People, Not All Though.
Why is this?
Does the brain basically become desensitized?
