Meds take time to work and time to restart working after you stop them. Serotonin receptors for example, which are some of the targets of Risperdal, adjust slowly to medication; it may be weeks to get the response back.
Placebo is also part of the response to education. you have to believe that it's going to work again. You have to renew your faith in and attitude towards the medication working or your fixation on the negative will persist. Meds don't work alone, we have to work with them, which includes how we think about them and how much responsibility we give them over our lives.
All of this emphasizes the importance of staying on your medication consistently... noncompliance is common with these types of meds but that's no excuse to sabotage one's treatment especially if you're aware of this.
