Not everyone agrees when describing the relationship between BPD and BD. There is a great overlap in symptoms between them, and there is likely to be some genetic or epigenetic biological commonalities. More recently, several researchers are placing BPD in the bipolar spectrum. I think this is somewhat premature.

Many people who have BPD experience rapid changes in mood throughout the day. However, they are often triggered by psychosocial stresses, situations, or events. The mood shifts in BPD are often referred to as emotional dysregulation. Ultradian rapid-cycling bipolar disorder is rare. Here, though, mood switches are independent of environmental or psychic triggers. With non-cycling MDD, mood-drift during the day is common. A great percentage of people with MDD experience a regular change in the severity of their depression that follows the same pattern each day. Historically, melancholic depression (formerly known as endogenous depression) is much worse early in the day, while atypical depression often shows the reverse diurnal pattern. My untreated depression (most likely bipolar) is consistently worse between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM. This is unusual. In particular, I suffer from a greater loss of energy and concentration during these hours. Some people experience a mood fluctuation after a meal. With ultradian rapid cycling, the switch between bipolar mood extremes is paroxysmal.

One difficulty in parsing BPD and BD is that they are sometimes comorbid - perhaps by 15% - 20%.
