This is really unfair. My experience is that most psychiatrists are in business to help people and are genuinely good and caring people. It's one of the lowest paying specialties in medicine. They don't feel they are giving out sugar pills - many people get better on meds. They know as much as anyone knows about the brain and mental illness and meds. I have seen many psychiatrists over the last ten years - one long-term, another for addiction issues and several in hospitals - and, except for the creepy guy who gave me ECT, I have been impressed by all of them, found them compassionate and caring and competent.
