Primarily, these receptors bind endogenous (originating within the human body) pain-relieving compounds, such as endorphins. Semi-synthetic compounds, like heroin, also stimulate these receptors. There appears to be a feedback loop, where blocking these receptors a little may cause an increase in endorphin production."
