maybe try a newer anticonvulsant? I don't know if you're bipolar, and diagnosis really isn't that big an issue, anyway...
...many anticonvulsants can keep you calm(er) and often have a positive effect on mood (not always; watch out for new mood problems). Personally, I've opted for Trileptal and Lamictal (low dose) instead of Depakote or Lithium.
If your problems are mild(er), you could try different supplements (I take massive doses of niacinamide for my anxiety..combined w/ a b-100 and lots of time-release C, it gets the job done) and see how that helps.
I'm not an MD, obviously. Also, I'm biased, because I'm personally terrified of Lithium (kidney damage and labs...not my thing, lol).
