Is this a theory or are there scientific studies that demonstrate this? I may have come across some animal studies, but I don't remember.

I think most doctors still believe that such combinations are contraindicated. If MAOI monotherapy were to produce a remission in me, I would not want to take any other drugs and experience side effects or worse. Taking a NRI with a MAOI doesn't necessarily confer a reduced risk of the cheese reaction occuring. I suffered a reaction to a few slices of pepperoni while taking a combination of Parnate and desipramine. Once was enough. I currently take Parnate and nortriptyline.
