Doxycycline is often chosen for Lyme Disease. It can take a few months to see results if you have had an infection for awhile. You might even feel worse before you feel better. This is attributed by some to a die-off of bacteria and the toxins that are released. This is referred to as the Herxheimer reaction.

An interesting alternative would be minocycline, a drug that also treats Lyme Disease. However, it does an array of different things in the brain that are unrelated to its antibiotic properties. It really does help some people with depression, and is thought to work by affecting glutamate activity and reducing brain inflammation. I tried it. The stuff works. Unfortunately, some people develop hyperpigmentation - a discoloration of the skin and gums. I had to stop taking minocycline after 1 1/2 years because a dark discoloration developed on my feet and shins. These discolorations might fade, but aren't always reversible.
