Just a follow up to a comment I made in an earlier thread on public medical research to counter the limits of private drug company research.
Funding for the NIH fell by 20% since 2003 (not adjusted for inflation. With an inflation adjustment it would be about 30%).
In the 2016 budget, the NIH got an additional $2 billion, an increase of about 3.5%, which is something, but does not restore previous cuts. Apparently, 2015 had the lowest rate of successful research grant applications since the NIH was founded. As part of the increased appropriation for the NIH, NIMH's budget was raised by $85 million, a 5.9% increase. This again does not restore prior cuts.
NIH conducts basic bio-medical research on promising treatments, without regard to the profitability of those treatments.
