That's a difficult question to answer without specifying what criteria to use. For instance, zimelidine (Zelmid) was the first SSRI to be approved for sale, and was debuted in Europe. However, it was soon discovered that it caused a sometimes fatal GuillainBarré syndrome. Indalpine was next, but turned out to precipitate agranulocytosis, and was subsequently removed. The first SSRI to remain on the market was fluvoxamine (Luvox). It was originally called clovoxamine.
In the United States of America, the first SSRI to be marketed was fluoxetine (Prozac). I think sertraline (Zoloft) was the second. Meanwhile, citalopram (Celexa) was developed in Europe as paroxetine (Paxil) was being approved in the USA.
