i tolerated a low dose OK, way back when. dose got up to 5mgs...akathisia, couldn't sit still, barely making coherent convo. oddly enough, i do well on abilify, which is supposedly the akathisia-inducer.
it isn't just 'weight gain.' even in the absence of massive weight gain, it can mess with blood sugars, lipids. one former shrink...she was old school...told me she never started people on it, she only prescribed it when people came in on and were stable and/or reluctant to switch.
i read bits and pieces of this books by a psychiatrist on psychotic depression. kind of...interesting, because psychotic depression is relatively common, but not well researched. he referred to zyprexa as a 'frontal lobe tamer,' which...
frightened me. i appreciated his candor, in the context of the book, but one wonders...when he puts inpatients on it, outpatients on it...does he tell them 'why, yes..this will tame your frontal lobes'..." ? probably not. sounds kind of...like a Hannibal Lector phrase, honestly. -shudder-
metformin helps some people with weight gain, blood sugar. i read the abstracts for some small studies that found high doses of alpha lipoic acid, green tea extract helped, also.
i hope things go well for you. :-)
