I was first diagnosed as having a a mood disorder in 1982. In 1987, after numerous drug trials administered by clinical researchers at Columbia and New York University, a doctor in private practice hit the bullseye on his very first shot a combination of Parnate 60 mg/day plus desipramine 150 mg/day. Unfortunately, I became manic after 6 months of remission. He elected to discontinue this treatment and never revisit it, even after my failing to respond to Parnate and Nardil monotherapy, and the brand new Prozac. My next doctor decided that I should try the Parnate + desipramine combination treatment again. It didnt work this time, despite pushing the dosages of both drugs higher than they were when I responded to them the first time. I began seeing my current doctor in 2002. The very first thing he did was to have me try trimipramine (Surmontil). When that didnt work, he persuaded me to try doxycycline just in case my illness was the result of Lyme Disease. I stayed on it for 3-4 months. It didnt help, but it was a logical choice given my history of treatment failures. However, even though he gives lectures around the world and publishes papers regarding the psychiatric manifestations of Lyme Disease, he doesnt act under the assumption everyone walking through his door is infected. I never thought to ask him what percentage of his patients displaying depression turn out to have Lyme. Ill try to remember to ask him when I see him next.
