I don't know. Have you tried melatonin? Some people swear by it.
Most people don't do well without routine. I don't have a regular sleep-wake cycle without routine. I used to work at a horseracing stable and needed to be at work at 5am. You get used to it. Difficult for the first week or two but you do it because you don't have a choice, really. Then would find myself falling to sleep faster and more soundly and waking up just before it was time to get up. Same when I needed to get up to get to class at 8am or whatever.
I try and mimic that for internal reasons but I don't seem able to do it. I'm not competent to make a decision about whether it's time to get up or not when my alarm goes off and I don't physically have someplace that I need to be.
