Hi.

> I was on phenelzine and it stopped working after 15 years. Then on parnate which I liked and was on for 6 years . I then went a bit high on it, so reduced it and it just stopped working altogether. Was put on lamotrigine and that worked for 3 months and then just stopped.

Has anyone else had this? Is it a sign of some kind of bipolarity? Im in England under the NHS which is hopeless. Have asked for Marplan, but dont know if they will agree. Has anyone had this experience of drugs working just for a while ? And what can be done about it?

I am currently headed for remission taking:

Nardil - 75 mg/day
nortriptyline - 75 mg/day
Lamictal - 300 mg/day
lithium - 300 mg/day

You most likely have Bipolar Disorder: Depressive Subtype with drug-induced manias. Like you, my baseline state is one of severe, unremitting depression. The only times I became manic was during treatment combinations using MAOIs.

I would go back to Nardil 60-90 mg/day. You must titrate gradually. If you go higher than your optimal dosage, you will be over-medicated and can relapse. Try each dosage for 3-6 weeks before making a dosage adjustment.

I would begin taking lamotrigine 200-300 mg/day first, and leave it onboard while you try other medications.

1. What drugs have you tried?

2. What other drugs made you feel at all better, regardless of how briefly?

3. What combinations have you tried?

4. How would you best describe the symptoms of your depression?

My guess is that you are far from trying everything, but answering those questions might help steer you in the right direction.

You'll get there. Be patient if you can. Hope is your friend and savior.

Good luck.

I dream of things that never were and ask why not.

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.
