Generally speaking, too much fast brain wave activity on the right side and/or too much slow activity on the left side causes or greatly exacerbates depression and anxiety. Neurofeedback helps to bring these brain waves into balance.
You're correct about neurofeedback not being a reliable monotherapy, in many cases. But even when neurofeedback doesn't suffice on its own, it frequently allows people to significantly reduce their medication dosages.
