> EcherDementian: what filling material did you want. I'm a little confused about what materials are in my teeth and what amalgam actually is–the good one or the bad one. (I've got a lot of fillings.) I'd like to know what to ask for in the future.

Amalgam fillings are an alloy of mostly mercury and silver, and their appearance is quite dark once they age a bit (almost black). The problem is that they leach mercury, and mercury is quite toxic.

"Modern" fillings are sometimes called composite fillings, or acrylic fillings, or sometimes just "white fillings". They too have a little bit of a toxicity problem, but it is only for a very brief period, unlike amalgam fillings, which are toxic forever.
