It is nothing like the same thing. N-acetyl-cysteine is useful as an antioxidant support, and is the main treatment for liver poisoning as by acetominophen (paracetemol). Saying it is a substitute for SAMe is just plain false.

If you can get betaine (trimethylglycine), then you might consider that as a substitute for SAMe, but it is not equivalent to SAMe.
