The legality issue is confusing, isn't it? As I understand it, it still cannot be sold "over the counter," but it IS legal to purchase it from a supplier that can guarantee its purity. The law is quoted at www.healthrecovery.com, so you can read that for yourself. Find the "individual product" L-Tryptophan and then read all the information. I do purchase mine online and pay with a credit card. It comes in just a few days. It makes a tremendously positive difference in the way I feel. The cost at this site is less than at some others I've seen. Though many people take 2-3 grams, I find 500 mg great for now and will increase if I feel I need to. I just happen to have the types of problems that Tryptophan most benefits - mild depression, anxiety, and difficulty sleeping.
What many people do is take veterinary Tryptophan. It is safe to do that.
Also on www.healthrecovery.com, they explain why L-Tryptophan is better than 5HTP. With 5HTP, you are likely to have a lot of serotonin circulating in your blood, but not in your brain where you need it.
I found a nice article about Tryptophan on the Wikipedia site. Let me know if you have any more questions.
