Taurine is a rather special amino acid. It's the sulphur version of GABA, the natural calming neurotransmitter. If you played really loosey-goosey with the chemical terminology, taurine would be GASA (gamma-amino sulphonic acid).
Taurine, like GABA, is an inhibitory neurotransmitter. There are dedicated taurine reuptake pumps in every brain synapse. I think it is underappreciated just how many neurotransmitters there are. Anyway, if you take oral GABA, it does not cross the blood/brain barrier. Oral taurine, however, does so quite readily. Taurine is amazingly inexpensive, too. I got 300 grams for $10, or something like that. I take about a gram a day, at bedtime.

Niacin is also known as nicotinic acid. Niacinamide is also known as nicotinamide. Niacin is activating. Niacinamide is calming. There are other acid/amide activating/calming pairs, too. Glutamic acid is activating. Glutamine is calming.
To emphasize that I am referring to niacinamide being calming, I sometimes capitalize the amide part (niacinAMIDE).
