> I've been taking 5-HTP for 2 weeks now. 100mg at night and 100mg at breakfast. Within a couple days I felt the depression and anxiety decrease and I was very optimistic and excited. Over the last two weeks my vision has become blurred and I have dull nauseating headache in the front of my head and my eyes ache. I am willing to put up with this if I knew it was temporary and will go away. But I figure at two weeks it should be going away and am concerned that my dose is too high or I shouldn't be taking 5-HTP at all. I'm not taking any other medication at this time. I do take magnesium, calcium, and B Complex 50. I am worried if I drop my 5-HTP dosage to 50mg twice a day, the wonderful antidepressant effects will go away and I will be feeling very depressed and anxious again. I'm not sure what to do.
I think it's very important that you determine if the 5-HTP is linked to these symptoms, or not. I would recommend a complete discontinuation of the 5-HTP, a waiting period to see if the symptoms remit, and if they do, a retrial of the 5-HTP. That is called a challenge/rechallenge trial.
If it turns out to be the 5-HTP, all is not lost. You can try another brand. Or, you can just take it, on and off, on and off.
If that, too, is a problem, then we can discuss tryptophan.
Your body is speaking to you. You can learn something about the language it's using.
