Instead they get a characteristic unpleasant odor similar to oil-based paint. But I have seen people complain that some flax oil smells fishy. I had thought that was an indication of rancidity and that omega-3 fats just smell different from others when they go rancid. (Fresh cooked whole flaxseeds, on the other hand, taste nutty.)
