It should be safe, so long as you match the doses, based on your individual response. The rule is "Start low, and go slow."

That's start at the lowest possible dose, and increase gradually, with lots of time between increases (to watch for effects that might take time to appear). I'd go for a three week interval on the increases.

5-HTP makes some people sleepy, so night-time dose might be the way to go.
