The data are old, and studies not well-conducted, under modern standards. Where effects were shown, they were not hugely convincing. It looks like some people have a great response, but most people have little to no response.
Animal studies focussed on carboxypeptidase A, but as you say, there are multiple pathways/enzymes to consider.
Interestingly, naloxone abolished the effect in one study.
